after Croatia's recent WTO entry. Small markets and street
vendors still dominate distribution but supermarket chains are

In the first eleven month of MY 2000/2001
(Oct/Aug) total German imports of fresh citrus fruit amounted to
1,055,812 MT, 1.9 percent or 20,424 MT of which originated from
the United States. Grapefruit accounted for almost all of the US
citrus exports to Germany. Spain supplies 75 percent of all
citrus imported into Germany.

Post forecasts 2001/2001 cocoa production to
increase due to good rains and the vigorousness of young trees.
Introduction of a new marketing system took effect from October
2, 2001, the beginning of the 2001/2002 marketing year. Cocoa
bean exports are expected to increase in 2001/2002 due to
increased supply and favorable world market prices. The new
marketing system has undone the 1999 market liberalization and is
expected to put a squeeze on the operation of major exporters.

and Coffee
Cote d'Ivoire liberalized the marketing of coffee and cocoa in
1998 and 1999 respectively. The collapse of world market price of
these commodities coincided with the liberalized market. Imbued
with the idea that the market liberalization led to this market
collapse, the Government hired the HSBC/Equator Bank to do a
marketing study.

Mexico's Secretariat of Economy (SE) announced in the Mexican
Federal Register changes to product descriptions and tariff
rates. Tariffs went into effect on October 12, 2001.

Imports of apples, pears, apricots,
peaches, plums, quinces, cherries, almonds, walnuts, ornamental
apples, pears and corn from China have been banned by the
Philippine Department of Agriculture after discovery of a codling
moth in a shipment of Chinese apples.

- Coffee Imports from the U.S. Exceed 2001 NAFTA Safeguard
On October 5, 2001, Mexico announced that
the quantity of select coffee products (HS Nos. 2101.11.01;
2101.11.02; 2101.11.99 and 2101.12.01) imported from the U.S.
have exceeded the safeguard quota agreed to under NAFTA. As a
result, starting October 6, 2001, the tariff rate increased from
4 percent to 20 percent and will remain in effect through
December 31, 2001.

Kong - Fruit Market Development
Hong Kong is a major market for U.S. and
other fruit exports, ranking 12th in the world in its volume of
imports. Between 1996 and 2000, fruit imports grew by an average
3% annually. Although the U.S. is still the leading fruit
supplier to Hong Kong, its market share dropped significantly
from 33% in 1996 to 26% in 2000.

announced that the 2001 NAFTA safeguard for U.S. apples
(0808.10.01) has been filled and that the 20 percent safeguard
tariff will apply starting April 4, 2001, and remain in effect
through December 31, 2001.

The Mexican Market
for Fresh Vegetables
Mexican consumption of fresh vegetables
increased slightly from USD$2.9 billion in 1999 to USD $3 billion
in 2000. Although national production is, bt far, the main sorce
of supply for national consumption, imports are growing. In fact,
US exports of fresh vegetables to Mexico reached a record USD
$68.8 million in 2000, an impressive 47 percent increase over
exports in 1999 (Source for US export data: US Bureau of the
Census Trade Data).
