The following is a list of organizations that can provide you with additional information, resources, and guidance.


Tobacco Control Organizations

Action on Smoking and Health*
A national organization for people concerned about issues of smoking and health, including nonsmokers’ rights. Provides information on the health effects of secondhand smoke, cessation, and other tobacco issues.

American Legacy Foundation*
A national, independent public health foundation established by the 1998 tobacco settlement. Dedicated to reducing tobacco use in the United States with major initiatives reaching youth, women, and priority populations through grant awards, research initiatives, marketing campaigns, training programs, and collaboration with national and local partners.

Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights*
A national organization dedicated to advancing nonsmokers’ rights. Provides information about the health effects of secondhand smoke, effective approaches to local clean indoor air policy. Includes model ordinances, and the tactics used by the tobacco industry to oppose such policies, including accommodation, ventilation, and preemption.

Association for Nonsmokers—Minnesota*
An organization working for nonsmokers’ rights in Minnesota, which has extensive experience with clean indoor air issues. They offer information on secondhand smoke.

Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids*
A national organization dedicated to reducing youth tobacco use, with a special focus on policy interventions at the national and state levels.

Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition*
Established in 1984 to reduce tobacco use in Minnesota. Contains information and resources on secondhand smoke and ways organizations at the state level can proactively support local clean indoor air policy efforts.

National Health Organizations

American Cancer Society*
Provides education, prevention, and cessation programs, as well as informational materials, such as pamphlets and posters.

American Heart Association*
Promotes smoking intervention and cessation programs at schools, workplaces, and health care sites.

American Lung Association*
Conducts programs addressing smoking cessation, prevention, and the protection of nonsmokers’ health. Provides a variety of educational materials for the public and health professionals.

American Medical Association*
Provides tobacco use cessation guides for physicians and health care providers. Also has links to the Journal of the American Medical Association and other publications. The AMA is also the organizational home of the SmokeLess States Program (see entry below under SmokeLess States).

Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations*
A national, nonprofit membership organization that helps to fund and support local affiliates working directly with communities on asthma and secondhand smoke.

Association of State and Territorial Health Officials*
A national nonprofit organization representing the state and territorial public health agencies of the United States, the U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia.

Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America*
Provides health, economic, and other data on asthma and allergies.

Guide to Community Preventive Services*
Provides recommendations based on a systematic, independent, expert review of the published literature on effective tobacco control interventions implemented in community and health care systems settings.

National Association for Public Health Statistics & Information Systems*
Provides a link to all of the state departments of health.

National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO)*
NACCHO’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Project aims to strengthen local health departments’ capacity to engage in tobacco use prevention and control.

National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH)*
Seeks to strengthen the capacity of local boards of health, including their capacity in the area of tobacco control policy. Provides a wealth of resources on tobacco prevention and control.

National Institutes of Health PubMed
A searchable database of health and medical journals.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation*
The largest U.S. foundation devoted to improving the health and health care of all Americans. Tobacco control is a major funding priority.

Smoke-Free Environments Law Project*
(The Center for Social Gerontology, Inc., Ann Arbor, Michigan) Web site contains extensive information on the legal aspects and economic impact of clean indoor air policies.

SmokeLess States*
The SmokeLess States National Tobacco Policy Initiative is a private-sector effort that supports activities of statewide coalitions working to improve the tobacco policy environment with the goal of reducing tobacco use. Local clean indoor air policy is a major area of emphasis.

World Health Organization (WHO)*
WHO’s Tobacco Free Initiative was created to focus international attention, resources, and action on the global tobacco pandemic. Contains international statistics and information on the health impact of tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure.

CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health Media Campaign Resource Center for Tobacco Control
Provides access to existing state and federal tobacco control ads, as well as guidance on developing an effective media campaign. (Note: Inclusion of an ad in the Media Campaign Resource Center does not imply that the CDC is vouching for its effectiveness.)

Department of Justice, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) Home Page
Provides answers to general and technical questions about the ADA and order technical assistance materials.

Environmental Protection Agency
Contains information about the health effects of secondhand smoke, indoor air quality issues, and approaches to protecting children from exposure to secondhand smoke in the home.

Legal Resource Center for Tobacco Regulation, Litigation & Advocacy*
Dedicated to giving legal support to communities, community groups, employers, local governments, and others wishing to reduce smoking, the sale of tobacco products to children, and the health impact of tobacco products.

National Cancer Institute
The federal government's principal agency for cancer research and training.

State of California* Tobacco Control Section provides information about California’s tobacco control efforts.

State of Massachusetts* Tobacco Control Section is a statewide government program dedicated to addressing the severe health risks associated with tobacco use.

The Tobacco Control Resource Center, Inc., & the Tobacco Products Liability Project*
Located at the Northeastern University School of Law, this site provides extensive information on legal issues related to tobacco control, including legal aspects of local clean indoor air policy.

ANR’s Legislative Resources on the Web*
Provides links for tracking local, state, and federal legislation.

Advocacy Institute*
An organization dedicated to strengthening the capacity of social change advocates, including tobacco control advocates, through interactive capacity-building trainings and other means.

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE)*
An international membership organization dedicated to advancing the art and science of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration for the public’s benefit. Sets ventilation standards for public buildings that, while not binding, are closely watched and widely observed.

S.A.F.E. Smokefree Air for Everyone*
A network of individuals injured or disabled by secondhand smoke.

Smokescreen Listservs*
A list of forums and mailing lists dedicated to the smoke-free movement throughout the United States.

Tobacco.Org*
Online source for national and international tobacco news.

Tobacco Documents Online*
One of the most comprehensive collections of tobacco-related documents on the Web. Advanced search options provide a powerful research tool.

Fundamentals of Clean Indoor Air Policy* ( PDF)
Recommended guiding principles for conducting effective clean indoor air campaigns. These principles are based on the experiences of tobacco control advocates throughout the United States over many years.
