Certification and Accreditation

EPA operates a Federal training and certification program for lead-based paint activities in target housing and child-occupied facilities in those States, Territories and Indian Tribes that are not operating their own EPA-authorized lead training program. This program requires training, certification, and adherence to specific work practice standards when conducting lead-based paint activities which include inspection, risk assessment, and abatement. See the map and list below to determine if your state/tribe/territory is authorized. Where available, links are provided to individual authorized programs, for additional assistance contact the National Lead Information Center (NLIC) at 1-800-424-LEAD (5323).

If the area where you plan to work is part of the EPA Federal Program, use the forms and instructions provided to apply for accreditation or certification. Please be sure to read the instructions before completing the form to ensure your application materials are completed correctly.

If you have questions while you are preparing the application form, you can contact the NLIC at 1-800-424-LEAD. If you would like additional information about the Lead-Based Paint Training and Certification Rule that EPA operates its Federal Program under, including Interpretive Guidance under TSCA sections 402/403 that further explains the rule, click here.
