Division of RealtyThe Division of Realty focuses its work in these areas: New Lands Biologists and planners help identify potential new lands to be acquired for the National Wildlife Refuge System. They work with local communities, landowners, state agencies, and private conservation groups to carefully plan where new lands and waters should be protected for endangered species, migratory birds or other nationally important fish and wildlife conservation purposes. Before a new refuge is established or the boundary of an existing refuge is significantly revised, the Fish and Wildlife Service completes a detailed planning process to consider the effects of these actions. The Fish and Wildlife Service also prepares management plans for existing refuges. The Division of Realty also works with refuge staff and local communities in preparing Comprehensive Conservation Plans for each National Wildlife Refuge. Using funds from the sales of Federal Duck Stamps and from congressionally appropriated Land and Water Conservation Fund, the Realty Division's staff of appraisers and specialists works with landowners who are willing to sell property or property interests to the Service. They identify fair market value and make fee title or easement purchases with landowners. Managing Real Estate Records Once the properties are acquired, Realty staff is also responsible for managing real estate records for the over 1 million acres in Fish and Wildlife Service ownership in our 8-state region. It also works to assure that counties receive revenue sharing payments. More Information? For additional information, check the USFWS Division of Realty Home Page. Region
