Sample Submission and AnalysisPrior to starting a Resource project, project investigators should discuss the AMS protocols that need to be undertaken with the Resource staff. This will include methods to minimize contamination of samples, as well advice on how to prepare samples for submission. If Human Subjects or Vertebrate Animals are involved in the experiments as a source of the samples, all documentation of approval for the protocols utilized must be accepted by and on file with the Resource before samples may be sent for analysis. Notification of the impending, or actual, shipment of samples to the Resource must be sent by email to the Resource Administrator along with the completed BioAMS Sample Submission form (XLS, Microsoft Excel Document). The BioAMS Sample Submission form must list each sample's id and description (e.g. tissue type), quantity (e.g. volume and concentration, approximate weight), an estimated or measured DPM per unit sample, and the molecular weight and specific activity (mCi/mmol) of the labeled compound. Other relevant information should be added. Unless biological samples have been dried, all biological samples should be frozen and shipped on dry ice. Individual samples should be placed in airtight securely capped containers (e.g. screw capped eppendorf tubes, screw capped centrifuge tubes, etc.) with labels bearing requester's name, sample name (code names are desirable if chemical name is lengthy), project number and date. If each sample tube is not clearly labeled, the samples will not be processed. A hardcopy of the completed BioAMS Sample Submission form should accompany the samples in the box.
Samples will generally be run in the order received. Sample turn around will vary but, based on previous experience, should be on the order of 2 to 4 weeks. (Our goal is a two week turn-around for all samples but factors such as instrument scheduling and user participation can affect this). Data can be returned to the submitter via fax, email or regular mail.
